Most folk I know are either dog people or cat people. They just seem to naturally gravitate toward one or the other, and usually they make no bones about it. I, however, grew up with one cat and one dog, and have always loved both. My dog, Flower, and my cat, Morris, loved one another; they would sleep and play together. This only made it more difficult for me to choose one over the other when someone would ask: Do you like cats better, or dogs?
I understand the argument for each favorite. Cats curl in your lap. They purr! They're independent and easier to care for than dogs. Dogs are fun. They'll romp around on the floor with you. They're protective and loyal. But I still like both. I especially love when you see the two trading traits - I've seen cats that fetch and dogs that curl quietly at your feet.
I value the traits of each pet and think owning one of each is an ideal scenario. Of course your best bet is to acquire both pets at the same time, when they're young, so they grow accustomed to one another. Otherwise you're gambling that one may bully the other. Right now I own a cat and no dog - we have a son with autism and are waiting for him to grow a little bit older before we get a dog. It's just as well, because our cat hates other animals and I think it would be cruel to try to bring a dog on the scene.
I am happy to say I've never purchased a pet. They all were rescued from alleys, animal shelters, or wooded areas behind office buildings or restaurants. I never understood why anyone would buy a pet when there are countless unwanted animals in the world. And most people I know who have purebred dogs or cats have lost them at an early age due to some medical problem. My next door neighbor had two beautiful, friendly purebred collies he purchased from a reputable breeder. One developed hip problems and the other went blind. Both died very young; I don't think either lived to be ten years old. On the other hand, all of my mutts, both cats and dogs, lived to be at least fifteen, and all without any serious health problems. (I'm not counting the time my cat Ringo ate a dime !
Whatever pet you choose, for whatever reason, I hope you love it as much as it surely will love you. And before you purchase a pet, please consider adopting an unwanted pet that's already born. Pets can and do express gratitude to the owners who rescue them. I promise you won't be sorry !
